Erlitou Archaeological Site Concealment
For a sensitive excavation at the Erlitou site, a series of retractable wooden frame tents were set up. Each frame supported a camouflage net over an open pit. The net blocked aerial sight and sunlight. Archaeologists could easily lift it for work, while it protected the site from looters and weather.

During excavation work at the Erlitou archaeological site, protecting the dig areas from casual observation and sun exposure was critical. The team erected telescoping wooden frames above 12 active dig pits. Each frame was covered by a camouflage net designed to look like dense shrubbery. The nets were completely opaque from above, preventing any drone or aerial view of the site.
The netting also cast shade over the pits, which slowed evaporation and protected delicate pottery sherds from cracking in the sun. Archaeologists could easily lift a section of net or roll it back as needed for work, then drop it again to cover the area. Beyond weather protection, the net concealed the artifacts from outsiders, reducing the chance of unauthorized drone photography or visitor disturbance.
Since deployment, satellite images of the site showed no clear glimpses of excavation pits. The camouflage effectively anonymized the excavation layout. Local authorities noted that the net installations complied with cultural preservation guidelines by providing both physical protection and informational security for the priceless relics under study.
